Work-Based Learning
During the ProtoLabs Facility Tour, the Academy of Engineering students were able to observe biomedical engineering in the real-world workplace. It sparked the interest of many students, and we were able to see many skills taught to us in the Academy being applied by the employees in that field.

During the summer of 2019, I attended an NC State University camp about Astrophysics. The experience sparked my interest of engineering and physics in further study and inspired me to pursue a career in the field.

In June of 2019, I toured the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Durham, North Carolina. I later signed up for AP Environmental Science after this tour and marked the beginning of my interest in environmental or nuclear engineering.

I was given the opportunity to participate in the Academy of Engineering's sophomore Job Shadow program during my freshman year of high school. I shadowed with employees of the City of Raleigh Public Utilities. I was introduced to the field of civil engineering.

While I was a freshman in high school, a new middle school was in the process of being built by LORD Corporation. As part of the Academy, we were given the opportunity to tour the inside of a construction site and view future plans and blueprints, focusing on the construction aspect of engineering.

During the sophomore Job Shadowing program in the Academy, I toured the facility of ATI Industrial Automation. This was a new field of engineering I had been introduced to, and found the facility as a workplace where I could not picture myself working. While I did not enjoy my job shadow, I was able to use it as a way to narrow down my options in my future career.
